Timing is everything when it comes to hydroseeded lawns, and that idea applies when you first seed the lawn, when it’s time to mow, and when it’s time to fertilize the lawn. Another issue you may need to deal with is the arrival of weeds like dandelions, clover, and crabgrass.

Did you know that a single dandelion may create up to 15,000 seeds and can survive in the soil to rise again each year even when it’s cut down? Avoiding weeds can feel like a full-time job, but here are some options for taking care of your lawn’s weed problems.

Reduce Weeds by Hydroseeding in the Summer

Most landscaping and yard professionals will suggest planting in the spring or summerl for the best results. To reduce the likelihood of weeds invading the lawn, some professionals recommend getting the lawn hydroseeded to reduce the likelihood of weeds showing up after the initial application.

There are also options regarding the application of hydroseeding that can limit how many weeds appear in the lawn once the grass starts growing. For example, you’ll get fewer weeds in the lawn if you add new topsoil to the area before the hydroseeding. Also, if you really don’t want to take care of weeds, your hydroseed company can recommend the best grass for low weed growth.

Reed Hydromulch is your ally when it comes to planning a new hydroseeded lawn that doesn’t grow weeds.

Work with a Professional Landscaper

Just as it’s a good idea to have a professional perform your hydroseeding in Dallas, the same is true for taking care of the lawn in the long run. While you might have a particular affinity for mowing the lawn and taking care of your home’s exterior, many homeowners only take care of their lawn every few months when the mood strikes, which can lead to weed growth and an overgrown lawn.

Arranging for service from a professional landscaper after your hydro-seed lawn is installed is a great way to make sure the necessary maintenance and care occurs on the right schedule for your lawn. Too often, a lawn looks incredible soon after the hydroseeding is completed, but caring for the lawn becomes an afterthought and a task to be done “later.” Putting off regular lawn maintenance may mean extra weeds.

Get a professional’s help during and after the hydroseeding process! Your lawn will thank you!

Getting Rid of the Weeds Yourself

If you’re a particularly avid gardener, or you take pride in caring for your lawn, there’s no reason you can’t solve your weed problems with some standard herbicides. Major manufacturers and their weed removal products like can help you take care of weeds like clover, chickweed, and oxalis. Crabgrass is usually pretty tough to fight, but your local home and garden center may have a specialty herbicide you can use.

Natural options for fighting weeds include using corn gluten meal, which is supposed to stop the seeds of the weeds from growing into new weeds. Another interesting option is using one ounce of vodka mixed with two cups of water and some dish soap. You can apply this solution directly to each weed, and it should dry the weeds out.

When applying herbicides and weed killers to your lawn, resist the urge to dampen the entire lawn because you don’t want to kill the grass, too.

A Healthy Lawn Resists Weed Growth

A lawn that’s splotchy and patchy with grass and weeds is not the easiest surface to deal with when you’re trying to grow grass and get rid of weeds. The best way to tackle weeds after you’ve fought them once is to make sure that your grass is healthy and thick. Weeds can’t take root and thrive if there’s no room for them.

If you’re interested in a lush, thick lawn for your Dallas home, get in touch with Reed Hydromulch, Inc. We’ll put you on the right path to a beautiful lawn that’s thick, green, and weed-free.

This equipment means you have the choice of a DIY yard or a professional visit.

If you’re apt to work on your own yard without the assistance of a professional like Reed Hydromulch, Inc., you might be wondering whether it’s worth it to call in a professional or whether renting your own equipment is the most effective option. Here are a few reasons why calling a professional hydroseeding company is a good idea.

Professionals Know Everything About Hydroseeding

If you’re thinking purely about the cost of professional hydroseeding versus doing it yourself, it’s important to consider more than the cost of the equipment and seed when doing your calculation. If you’ve been researching hydroseeding cost, you probably already know that it’s a less expensive option than traditional sod, and that the process is particularly fast in how swiftly your lawn begins to grow.

A professional hydroseeding brings more to the job than just the equipment and the seeds. A company that offers hydroseeding in Dallas knows the process inside and out, which means they can complete the task blindfolded and with no delays or problems. Hiring a professional hydroseed company means you don’t have to go through the initial process of trial and error with your seed application.

Also, a professional company will know exactly what seeds to use and what type of lawn will grow best in your region. You won’t seed your lawn only to find out that the lawn type you used would grow better in a northern climate with a long winter than in Dallas with its shorter winter that rarely hits the freezing point.

Take the headache out of first time hydroseeding and a trial-and-error application by using a professional company like Reed Hydromulch, Inc. to seed your lawn.

Hydroseeding Companies Offer a Range of Services

The average company offering hydroseeding services usually provides a variety of services related to landscaping and yards including hydroseeding, erosion control, and temporary water irrigation. In addition, companies like Reed Hydromulch also provide yard alternatives like drill seeding, as well as a variety of native Texas seeds for grass establishment.

Buffalo Grass Seed

In addition to providing exceptional and headache-free grass establishment services, a professional hydro seed company can also make recommendations for yard care and upkeep after the process is complete. Your hydroseeding company may provide landscaping services, or they can share the name of a trustworthy and reliable landscaping company.

Hydroseeding companies like Reed Hydromulch know their success depends on providing great results and healthy lawns, which means using a professional is the quickest way to a lush, green lawn.

Making Your Hydroseeded Lawn a Success

Hopefully, you’ve come to the conclusion that calling a professional for hydroseeding your lawn is the best way to get a green lawn. However, there are some additional steps you can take to make sure the effort put into your lawn by those professionals results in the best looking yard.

Here’s how to care for your lawn, particularly in the first month after application.

Water the lawn regularly – Ask your hydroseed company how often to water the lawn and stick to the recommended schedule.

Mowing the lawn – Wait until the grass is about three inches tall across the majority of the yard and then trim the yard with the mower on a high setting for the first few mowing days.

Fertilize the lawn – Your hydroseeding company can offer recommendations on fertilizer. You’ll usually use fertilizer about a month after the application.

Ask your hydro seed company for advice on yard care in the future. You can reduce your overall hydroseeding cost by taking good care of the initial application so that the new lawn has the best chance of thriving.

If you have questions about hydroseeding, it’s time to get in touch with Reed Hydromulch, Inc. Having seeded lush, green lawns all over the Dallas area, there’s no better time to work with a professional to renew the appearance of the lawn around your home or business.

There are countless species of plants on earth, and many of them are incredibly beautiful and look like works of art. However, not all plants will thrive in every environment. A cactus might not grow well in the Arctic, and a pine tree might find life in the desert a little difficult.

Here are some simple concepts you’ll want to know before you decide on plantings for your residential home or commercial property. Learning about climate zones can improve the effectiveness of your erosion control efforts and the money you spend on maintaining the property.

Using the Plant Hardiness Zone Map

There’s no need to guess whether a particular plant will thrive on your Texas property. The Untied States Department of Agriculture maintains a helpful map that divides the country into “hardiness zones” where each zone is assigned a number (and sometimes a letter).

Over the years, researchers have refined and expanded upon the zone’s details to provide a helpful and accurate picture for successful planting.

Did You Know? Many plants available from standard garden centers feature numbers and letters that will let you know its best zones.

Texas A&M offers a simple map to help you figure out what plants are best for planting around the state.

What Plants Survive Well Around Dallas?

If you own a property around the Dallas area, there are hundreds of plants and trees that will thrive when you plant them in a commercial field, residential yard, or virtually anywhere in the region.

Large trees that survive well include black walnut, live oak, and bald cypress. Appropriate small trees include crape myrtle, desert willow, and Japanese black pine. Many grasses thrive in the Dallas area including Indian grass, big bluestem, and maiden grass.

What Plants Survive Well Around San Antonio & Austin?

Like Dallas, regions around San Antonio and Austin also provide many choices for beautiful landscaping plants that won’t need extra water and care throughout the year. Some local perennials grown in the region include oxblood lily, Hinckley’s columbine, and summer phlox.

Grass types that will thrive in the region include common Bermuda grass, emerald zoysia, and stampede buffalo. As you choose the grass for your lawn or commercial space, you’ll be able to choose one that fits your particular circumstances. For example, some grasses thrive in the shade while others do best in full sun.

Using Texas native grasses and plants is an essential way to reduce the amount of water and resources required to maintain the land. A ground cover like grass, trees, and shrubs helps prevent erosion, but the plants chosen for erosion control duty should be a type that’s appropriate for the environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency reveals:

“Each state and even areas within states differ in their ability to support different plant species without the need for supplemental water and fertilizers.”

The most important part of that sentence is “without the need for supplemental water and fertilizers.” Plants that don’t “belong” in the area where they’re planted require extra care, which means using more water and fertilizer to keep them healthy.

Choosing plants and grasses that are native to Texas is a healthy option for the environment, and it’s also a good way to reduce utility bills associated with the irrigation of fields or small-scale watering of residential yards.

Does your site need immediate vegetation? The professionals at Reed Hydromulching, Inc. can help you achieve your desired results. Reed Hydromulch specializes in planting native Texas seed, which includes wild flowers and grasses. Our re-vegetation team has 50 years of combined experience throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Due to varying site conditions, a site visit is necessary to customize a plan to suit the customer’s needs.

No till seed drills place seeds directly into the soil at the ideal depth without expensive soil preparation, saving the customer time and money. No-till seed drills eliminate tilling, which improves water absorption, increases organic matter retention, and salvages the nutrients in the soil, allowing re-vegetation. No-till drills enable the customer to more easily vary the types of vegetation without having to replace or replenish the current soil. You can be assured Reed Hydromulch uses only quality native seeds in our equipment. All equipment is thoroughly cleaned after every job so that the integrity of the planting can be ensured.

No-Till Drill Can Install up To 30 Different Species In One Pass

Drill seeding is an agricultural process complete with a tractor and a specialized seeding attachment called a drill. The drill utilizes a mechanical mechanism to open a furrow, place the seed in the soil at a certain depth, then cover the seed with wheels or some sort of packing mechanism. The depth of the seed can be regulated as well as the rate of application.

Because drill seeding uses no wood/fiber mulch in the process the cost is generally less. Drill seeding is advantageous on larger areas, more level areas and projects where obtaining adequate water to hydro-seed exist

Benefits of Drill Seeding:

Low cost compared to other erosion control treatments.
Placing the seed in the soil typically leads to better vegetative cover than hydroseed techniques due to additional protection from the sun, wind, birds and like items that typically inhibit seed germination.
Generally more successful than Seeding or Erosion Control (Hydroseed).
Requires only one-half the seeding rate of Seeding or Erosion Control (Hydroseed).
Vegetation provided by seed in this treatment provides long-term effective control of erosion.
